August 10 Name Day: Hero, Heron, Hippolytus, Lawrence and Lora

August 10, 2026

Today's name day reaches well beyond Greek family circles. Alongside the unmistakably Greek Hero, Heron and Hippolytus, the day also touches every Lawrence, Larry, Laura and Lora you know, the co-worker downtown, the classmate at summer school, the neighbour across the street. It is one of those dates when an old Greek custom becomes an easy Canadian conversation starter.

Hero comes straight from ancient Greek ?ro, a literary name best known from the tale of Hero and Leander, and it likely belongs to the same word family as ?ros, "hero." Heron, from ?ron, is also ancient Greek, a compact classical form preserved in history and literature. Hippolytus comes from ?ppolytos, built from hippos, "horse," and a second element from lyein, "to loosen" or "release," while Lawrence and the Laura or Lora family travelled a different route, from Latin Laurentius and laurus, the laurel tree, long associated with honour and victory.

In the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition, a person's name day is the feast day of the saint after whom they were named at baptism.

That gives the day an interesting mix of tones. Hero still feels bright and classical, the kind of name that suits the university friend with a sharp mind and a memorable presence. Hippolytus carries something older and more dramatic, easy to picture on a papou with a strong handshake and stories that take their time. And somewhere in the city, a Laura or Lora is moving through the day with that quiet laurel grace, whether she is your cousin, your hairdresser, or the teacher who somehow keeps everyone steady.

Lawrence and Larry may be the easiest bridge for Greek-Canadians to share today. The name sits so naturally in English that many people would never guess it stands in the same wider family as Greek Layrentios and Layrentis. That is exactly the charm of name days: they reveal connections already hiding in plain sight.

Chronia Polla! to everyone celebrating today, in Greek and non-Greek circles alike. If you know a Hero, Heron, Hippolytus, Lawrence, Larry, Laura or Lora, send the message along and let a small Greek tradition brighten someone's day.
